This year we completed our 3rd Annual Spring Seminar Series! A six session program over the course of 12 weeks where students participated in seminars involving Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Mathematics (STEAM). They also were able to meet and learn from STEAM professionals who were collegiate and professional athletes. Checkout the Highlights below!
Check out the highlights from our Science Spring Seminar with speakers Dr. Benedict Ifedi, Dr. Brooke Johnson, and Sydney Jones! Chemistry, sports nutrition and culinary arts came alive as students participated in a salsa making competition. Students learned about the enzyme alliinase which becomes the anti inflammatory compound allicin when garlic is chopped making salsa a great recovery snack! Students competed to see who could make their salsa be the most nutritious and tastiest!
Check out the highlights from our Tech Spring Seminar with speakers Kameco de los Santos, Domenica Delgado, and Latonya Ellerbee. Our superb panelists talked about their Tech journeys in STEAM and how finding mentors as well as career shadowing in high school, helped them shape their career interest to find a path that was fulfilling to them!
Check out the highlights from our Engineering Spring Seminar featuring speaker, Cameron Lavergne. Students designed traditional olympic events into their own Sphero Olympic Games, and then competed against each other in their respective teams. Students heard heard from Ms. Lavergne about finding the "best fit" for you in your career and how being open to pivoting is fundamental in successfully achieving any goal.
Check out the highlights from our Art Spring Seminar featuring speakers, Gabe Baker and Savannah Nevels! In our annual fashion design contest, students designed their Spring Seminar Series shirts and collectively voted on the final design. Students then heard from our speakers about establishing priorities while also developing the courage to adjust adjust them as they mature.
We concluded our 2024 Spring Seminar Series with our Math Seminar. Students competed in Mason’s MoneyBall Challenge where students created their own companies, prioritized budget line items and competed in sports challenges to determine their companies Profit and Loss margins which they then had to reconcile. Students heard from our amazing panelist Chaundra Frank and Trey Schuman about using this summer not only for rest and relaxation but to go out and try new things, master a new skill, discover another passion.
